We’re honored to announce that GadgetTrak took home 3rd Place in the 2011 CTIA Wireless E-Tech Awards!

The Emerging Tech awards represent the most innovative mobile companies in the world. We shared the category, “Productivity, Utility and Public Safety”, with amazing companies: Skype, LogMeIn, the Opera Browser, and SoftKey.

This year we were selected to pitch at the SXSX Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator, a cage match for technology companies to pitch their products against the best and the brightest from around the world. More than 400 companies applied to present at the event and only a handful were selected as finalists. Yes, I am proud to say we were selected as one of 8 finalists in the “Innovative Web Technology” group and we were in good company with companies like Hipmunk and Gazehawk, both Y Combinator companies with amazing products and strong teams. Over the past few years I have been doing a lot of pitching and this was a chance to rub shoulders with some of the giants in tech. When I got on stage and looked out at the crowd I thought for a second “Wow, how did we get here?”

GadgetTrak selected as SXSW Accelerator Finalist

March 09, 2011, Portland, OR — Austin, TX — ActiveTrak Inc, maker of GadgetTrak® Security (http://gadgettrak.com), was selected as a finalist in the Innovative Web Technologies category for Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator at SXSW, where early stage technology companies demo innovative new technology in front of influential industry judges and a live audience. Sponsored by Microsoft BizSpark, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, IBM, .CO, and Turner Broadcasting System, more than 400 companies submitted to present at the Microsoft BizSpark Accelerator at SXSW, where ActiveTrak was selected out of 40 finalists in five different categories.

The three-day event will be held Monday, March 14th – Wednesday, March 16th. The first two days of the event will be held on the fourth floor of the Downtown Austin Hilton and will feature finalists across categories including Innovative Web Technologies, Social Media and Social Networking Technologies, Entertainment Technologies, and News Related Technologies. Judges will select a winner in each of the four categories presented which will be revealed on March 15th at 6pm. The last day of the event will be held on the sixth floor of the Downtown Austin Hilton and will focus exclusively on Music-Related Technologies. The award ceremony for winners in this category will be revealed on March 16th at 6pm.

ActiveTrak will present alongside seven other companies in the Innovative Web Technologies at 3:30pm on March 14th. Mark Suster, Blair Garrou, and Tara ‘Miss Rogue’ Hunt will co-emcee the showcase on the 14th and 15th and Brad King and David Hyman will co-emcee the Music-Related technologies showcase on the 16th.

The award-winning GadgetTrak products bring cross-platform security to consumers and organizations for large scale deployments. PORTLAND, Ore – March 7, 2011 – ActiveTrak Inc. (www.activetrak.com) named a finalist in the category of Productivity, Utility and Public Safety in CTIA’s annual Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards competition. The CTIA E-Tech Awards honor the most innovative new products in 14 categories spanning the areas of mobile apps, consumer electronics, enterprise and infrastructure. Winners will be announced at International CTIA WIRELESS® 2011, taking place March 22-24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. Pre-conference seminars begin on March 21.

Why Android Anti-Virus Apps Failed to Detect Recent “DroidDream” Malware Scare

The recent “rageagainstthecage” or “DroidDream” malware scare in the Android market is one of the first real malware incidents we have seen on the Android platform in the Marketplace to affect a number of users. Google just pulled more than 50 popular free apps from the Android Market which contained malware aimed at rooting the user’s device, stealing large amounts of personal data and downloading more malicious code. The applications that are being marketed in the Android Market as “anti-virus” which are supposed to protect users from this type of malware were completely ineffective in this case, it was only when Google pulled the plug on them that people were aware.
